Sheffield Institute of Arts Degree Show: Class of 2015

Graduating Into the City

Degree shows are annual rituals in art and design education — the moment when three or more years of study become public. The Sheffield Institute of Arts Degree Show 2015, held to coincide with Sheffield Design Week, was a showcase of emerging talent that ranged from graphic design and illustration to fine art and photography.

Walking through the SIA studios, I was reminded of why these shows matter beyond the academic context. Degree shows are where cities meet the next generation of their creative practitioners. Sheffield, which depends on a steady flow of graduates choosing to stay and work in the city, has a particular stake in making these events visible and welcoming.

Work on Display

The graphic design section was strong, with several students demonstrating a typographic sensibility that felt distinctly Sheffield — functional, direct, with a respect for craft that echoes the city’s manufacturing ethos. One project, a wayfinding system for Kelham Island, showed real understanding of how design functions in public space.

The illustration students brought colour and narrative energy to the show. A standout series of risograph prints documented scenes from Sheffield’s markets — the Moor, Attercliffe, the old Castle Market — with an observational quality that captured both the atmosphere and the architectural detail of each location.

Education and Industry

The degree show sat within a programme that consistently valued the relationship between education and professional practice. Sheffield Hallam’s design courses have produced graduates who stay in the city and contribute to its creative culture, and the degree show was evidence of that pipeline in action.

The Design Platform exhibition the following year included work from several SIA graduates, demonstrating the continuity between student work and professional practice. For anyone interested in design education in Sheffield, the 2015 degree show was a particularly strong year.
